Reliable power supply for LiDAR systems in snowy areas

EKO Cooperation

Wind farm project developers need reliable wind profiles for site assessment and farm design, often for at least one year. Conventional measurement equipment on temporary towers requires expensive grounding measures. Power supply at remote sites is a challenge, as there is often no connection to the power grid. Diesel generators are unsuitable, and power from small wind or PV systems is unreliable. Fuel cell generators can solve this, but have logistics, durability, and operational issues in extreme environments. This results in high costs for repeated site visits.

The challenge for wind farm developers is to obtain reliable wind profiles for site assessment and wind farm planning. Traditional equipment on temporary steel towers required expensive grounding measures and was not long-term or energy efficient. Power supply for measurements at remote sites was often a challenge, as there is usually no connection to the power grid there. Diesel generators were not a suitable option for long-term power supply. At the same time, power generation from small wind and/or PV systems proved to be insufficient throughout the seasons.

The solution to this challenge is to use the Windcube LiDAR system to generate wind profiles, as it allows for easy installation. This involves powering the Windcube with the Sunfire-Remote Cabinet 600, a fuel cell generator. The generator runs on commercial propane and provides clean power for the LiDAR and heating during the winter months. Its high efficiency and reliability means no site access is required during the winter, reducing costs.

The implementation of Windcube LiDAR technology in combination with the Sunfire-Remote Cabinet 600 fuel cell generator provides the following benefits:

  1. High quality wind profiles for future wind farm sites at competitive costs: Project developers can obtain accurate wind data, which is essential for permitting and site assessments.
  2. Avoid costly site visits under extreme conditions: Thanks to the reliable power supply and heating function of the fuel cell generator, no expensive and logistically complex site visits are required.
  3. Nachhaltige und kostengünstige Stromversorgung: Der Generator läuft mit handelsüblichem Propan und bietet eine langlebige und effiziente Energiequelle.
  4. Stable power supply under variable load requirements: The generator can reliably cover the power demand both in summer and winter.

By using this advanced technology, project developers can obtain accurate and reliable wind profiles for their wind farm sites without relying on costly and logistically complex site visits. The combination of LiDAR technology and fuel cell generator provides an efficient and environmentally friendly solution for power supply in remote and challenging environments.
